Club Events
May 15 marks day one of our tennis season in 2010. This is the occasion all members are invited to come to the club and renew old rivalries on the grass. It also is a great time to meet new members and help get them involved in scltc events.
The tennis will consist of make up matches that includes everyone and we also will be providing a BBQ lunch.
Join us for an exciting start to the year. Guests are welcome for a $20 guest fee.
Each year for the past 20 years, a group of tennis players and golfers visits the Cowichan Valley from the Seattle area. This fun group has had the moniker The Swallows attached to them for the past few years and we are always asked why. Very simple - they keep coming back like our resident summer birds. In any case we are always glad to have them. They rent four courts for four days and have a great time. They are great SCLTC fans and regularly contribute to the Silent Auction and a few will return a week or two later for the International Tournament. We will welcome them back this year in July. And a hearty thank you to all of them for their support of our Club.
This is one of the most popular events of the year. Players are invited to dress like the members who started the club in 1887. The first (and maybe second) matches are played with wood racquets supplied by the club. After that you use what ever you want.
Once again a BBQ lunch is served but this time we provide strawberries just like Wimbledon. Don't miss this day. It's a blast. Cost $5. Guests are welcome for the additional guest fee of $20. Starts at 10:00AM
Tuesday evenings are dedicated to Ladies tennis. Foursomes no longer necessary. There is a 15 minute warm-up followed by 35 minutes play with your partners. Players then change partners and play on for two more matches.
Bring $1.00 for balls. Contact Cathy Hodkinson roncat@telus.net for info.
All Members welcome (or guests for the $20 fee). Try to arrive by 5:50pm for a 6pm start. 30 minutes earlier after Aug. 15th. Bring $1 for the new balls. Change partners & opposition every 30 minutes. Have fun!
Charles Ayers is the organizer of this event with Isobel Hardie as alternate.
For a toonie you enjoy the most fun in the week. Just bring your racquet. Balls and refreshments provided. Best of all.. GREAT PEOPLE.
Everyone welcome.
A "ladder" system is used on Men's night with the objective of providing closely matched competition while encouraging mixing. On a given evening, you will play within a group of 4 or 5 players, rotating to play with everyone. Those with the highest total scores will move up on the next week's starting lineup.
All levels of players are welcome. Please encourage men you are comfortable playing with to join, as the system works best when a number of players compete at the same level. Although there is a small incentive to maintain your place on the ladder with regular attendance, you can drop in any time.
We start play at 6:00PM (5.30 after Aug 15th). Cost is $1.00 to cover balls. Contact Don Unger for more information.
The Compass Draw
This is a great, day long mixed doubles tournament. There must be 16 teams of any levels of play for it to work. After each match the winning team advances according to the compass draw sheet. The process gradually matches up teams of similar ability. Each team is guaranteed four matches. The winners of the eight finals become prize winners for a particular compass point.
We start at 10:00AM. So bring $10.00 to cover balls, lunch and prizes. Please sign up as a team in advance either at the club or email Peter Wilson at keenell2@shaw.ca to confirm that you and your partner want to be entered. Club Members only please. Call Peter at 250-748-2415 for further information or telephone registration.
This one day tournament is open to members and guests. Matches begin at 10:00. The cost is $10 for members and $20 for non members. Balls and cash prizes are included. Pot luck lunch. To enter, signup at the club or email Louise at tldwyer@shaw.ca
This a friendly event between MLAs and Press Gallery that occurs when they feel like, not necessarily every year. It is arranged by George McMinn who plays in our tournaments and is Clerk of the Legislature.
The Silent Auction is the Club's annual fund raiser held on the Tuesday of the week long Vancouver Island Grass Court Championship (The International). It has become an important event to the Club. Since 2000 the event has raised over $35,000. This is equivalent to about half of the money spent in the last three years on clubhouse renovations. Typically there are about 200 or more separate items for auction. The success of the Silent Auction is dependent on the efforts of all members to either contribute something of value or contact one or two donors who can offer merchandise or services for auction. It is in fact an opportunity for each member to be a volunteer and benefit the club financially at the same time.
We will visit Oak Bay Tennis Club on Friday Aug 6th and will host them onFriday June 18h. We need 6 men/women to form 6 teams for these days of social tennis. Please speak with Louise Dwyer if you are interested.
In place of the traditional club championships, we will be organizing a fun day of tennis for all members.
